SOTA - Mynydd Llangorse - GW/SW-015

Mynydd Llangorse - 515m, 2 points
Association: Wales Region: South Wales

Arriving back at the parking area, cars were now double parked and backed up on the muddy verges. I moved my car to allow a large camper van to squeeze into a spot in front of me, blocking me in, but agreeing that they would move before my return at 1630! There were now people and cars everywhere, all out enjoying the fine weather.
A quick bit of lunch and then up the hill to the next summit.

No sign of Mike, but another quick setup and quickly into a pile up.

The Shack

My newly acquired SOTA watch alerted me to the fact that I'd been spotted (as if I hadn't already guessed!).
Spotted!
What was to throw me more, was when it beeped a few minutes later with a message that John, MW0XOT/P, was also active on the same summit! I scanned the skyline, and sure enough, over in the distance towards the trig point I could see a mast swaying in the breeze.

Needless to say, a short while later John approached and introduced himself, just as I was winding up with QSO #47.
Log

For the secont time today I had a S2S with YU1WC/p, this time on YU/ZS-068.

After a bit of a chat with John it was soon time to pack up as the sun got lower in the sky.
A slow descent to the car, stopping to chat to numerous walkers asking the usual fishing related questions!

A fairly quick descent of Myndd Troed and a somewhat slower ascent of Mynydd Llangorse brought me to my favourite operating spot next to a small pile of rocks, offering some protection from the cold wind.

A quick set up and the calls start rolling in, 20 QSOs on 14Mhz, 12 on 10Mhz including a S2S with M1EYP/p on G/SP-015, and 17 on 7Mhz including a S2S with G4ASA/p on G/TW-004.

Quite a few walkers about during the afternoon and several stopped for a chat.

With plenty of time and daylight still available, I decided to go on a little hike out to the Trig point (which isn't at the summit) and back just to put in a few extra miles.

Arriving back at the "car park" there were now seven cars. I've never sen a single car here previously. One reason I stay away from activating at weekends!

Total for the day of 5.1 miles walked and 1630' of ascent.
94 QSOs and 5 S2S.
Temperature hovering around +3ºC.
Light wind and some mist.

Summit cairn
The ascent of Mynydd Llangorse is somewhat easier than it's bigger partner, but I still worked up a good sweat regardless of the below freezing temperatures. After the climb there is a long flat summit plateau, and in keeping with tradition, I set out to find the true summit. After quite a bit of walking  you eventually come across the small cairn marking the spot. With no shelter or a convenient pole support I back tracked to where I'd spotted a few standing stones on an otherwise featureless plateau. These served two purposes, firstly a good place to anchor the pole and secondly somewhere to hunker down out of the very cold wind. I was soon set up and, pretty obviously, spotted on the Sotawatch. The usual chasers were waiting for me and a productive activation produced 52 QSOs and 17 DXCC. With the day drawing on, an increasingly chilly wind, I packed up and descended to the car, A good days activating and 12 points in the bag.

Convenient shack location

Frozen lake

Positively balmy - thermometer reads 4.5C in the sunshine and out of the wind!
